Throw away kids' cheap metal jewelry
That's right -- the cute little rings you bought at the dollar store, the funny jewelry a pal gave your daughter, any children's jewelry that was made in China -- just throw it away. That's because studies just out say that the jewelry contains the toxic metal cadmium and that's just not good for anyone, much less kids. Wearing it is not the biggest danger: The fear is mostly that kids suck on and swallow the jewelry.
And because it can cost a pretty penny to have the jewelry tested, it's probably a better idea to just throw it away.
Back in 2007, there were some high-profile toy recalls because of lead levels found in them. Now it seems that cheap jewelry is the target. You just have to wonder what is safe these days.
If your kid wants a little bling, find something in your jewelry box and let her play with it. But you may want to make sure it's not filled with some dangerous metal.
