Touchdown teacher! Making math fun
I have to give kudos squared to my son’s 5th grade math teacher.
In addition to having a great classroom rapport daily, for the Super Bowl she gave out an extra credit worksheet with math problems that were game specific. Story problems with mileage between Pittsburgh and Green Bay, graphs comparing the two teams statistics, individual player comparisons, tallying ... many different skills but all revolving around a football game she knew they would all be watching anyway.
It was extra credit, but it related back to the lessons they’ve learned over the school year in a very fun and applicable way. The whole family all had fun doing “homework” on Super Bowl Sunday.
She did a similar exercise for the National Championship and the Bowl games, so I wonder (and hope) if she’s got something special planned for March or in this case, Math Madness.
Has your child's teacher done something particularly creative and effective? I think all too often examples of their talents are overshadowed by some of the not-so nice news and it's nice to share stories of the positive classroom experiences.
