Track colds and flu by region

February

Fever After I did my post a few weeks ago on how to get kids to  take their medicine, the folks at Triaminic alerted me to this nifty new Web site, the National Cold and Flu tracker. It takes boring government reports from the Centers for Disease Control and turns it into an easy-to-read map that provides a weekly data feed of cold and flu symptom trends by region. As you can see, Tampa is currently at a Very High alert, Fort Myers is at a Low alert. Suburban Diva Tracey Henry, confirms this with this recent tweet: "Almost 2 week streak for having at least one of (my kids) home from school due to fever. This needs to end now please."

Being aware of the activity in your area or where you are traveling might be the incentive we need to be vigilant about washing hands. But if your child does get sick, look at this advice from WebMD on whether you should keep them home. Personally, I hate those "Perfect Attendance" awards that give kids and parents an incentive to send a sick kid to school. Considering the average kid has six to 10 colds a year, I'd prefer they focus on not sharing the germs.
