What does the tooth fairy pay these days?
I get asked that question a lot from friends without kids, how much is the old girl paying these days? They, of course, got a quarter and are shocked by anything higher. Geez, they sound like my Grandma and her Great Depression stories sometimes.
I have to say I've been doing my part to keep the Tooth Fairy's budget balanced, but some parents -- and you know who you are -- are messing it up for the rest of us. My sisters and I got together on this, deciding if we all gave the same amount, we'd be safe. We came up with $2 and I take the kids to the dollar store to buy 2 toys with their tooth winnings. We thought we were brilliant until my son started school and informed me his friend got $20. Twenty??!! I wanted to tell him it's because his dad is a lawyer, but that isn't in keeping with the story. So I told him I had no idea why some kids get more but that I suspected their parents sneak in and put in some extra money under the pillow for the kids. I hope he doesn't take that thought out further and wonder why I don't do the same.
So I've been all over the map on this. My youngest got more for a first tooth because that's a milestone. And we had a front tooth knocked loose so he got $10 for that one for the pain and suffering. They hear stories of kids getting a big payoff and others who get a quarter.
Can we all get together on this, people?
