Whoa, Momma!

When parents text their kids (hilarity ensues)

parenttext.jpgA book just came across my desk called When Parents Text: So Much Said...So Little Understood and I have to say, this is addictive fun. As we all know, parents and technology are often a terrible mix. It was started by 20somethings Lauren Kaelin and Sophia Frailoli, who started the blog When Parents Text to let their peers share  their most frustrating or funny moments of their moms and dads wrapping their mind around texting protocol. They ended up with enough to write a book.

So the jokes on us here, but I gotta say it inspired me to think of this endless texting the kids do as a way to have fun with the kids and let them know you aren't just there to nag. Some of them are quite sweet in the mushy sentiments sent with thumbs.

Some of my favorites:

Study Tip
ME: this guy near me in the library is breathing SO LOUDLY and tapping his foot and I might have to murder him
MOM: Jail is a bad place to study too

Chocolate Chip
Dad: What are you doing?
Me: I’m at Grandma’s house. What do you need?
Dad: I want cookies. Chocolate chip. Get them for me. I will pay.
Me: Ask mom.
Dad: I did. She won’t. Says no. Get cookies please.
Me: I will on my way home.
(10 minutes later)
Dad: Nevermind. Mom found texts. NO COOKIES! ABORT MISSION!

Feminism Never Rests
Me: Dad! That bookstore I raved about has 4 stacks of women’s studies in a secret upstair room!  I died.
Dad: I am happy for you.  But nerdy daughter, it is Saturday night.  Please go out.

See You In a Few!
MOM: See you in a few!
ME: What?!
MOM: Oops sorry that was for dad.
ME: Okay good you scared me
MOM: WHY? WHAT ARE YOU DOING?? Now I’m worried, see you in a few.

DAD: Why do you keep sending me half finished texts.
ME: What are you talking about? I’m sending you whole texts.
DAD: Send me separate texts if they’re long. I can’t see any more than a sentence.
ME: Dad, scroll down.
DAD: Oh.

A Lot
DAD: There is still a bit you have to do to get the scholarship. Envelopes are at home. Love you both. A lot. I mean a LOT. Not just a little bit, but TONS! Do you get what I'm saying here? Are you picking up what I'm throwing down? Are ya with me?

And it comes with a "glossary" of parent-written emoticons

*$$$  Starbucks
:Z)      Breathe Right strip
3<]     Kicking butt
(?_?)   Unamused face
<3      Heart (or, as the dad in the photo above thought, a butt with a cone)
