While kids are away, Momma will -- do nothing
"Do you miss the boys?" That's the question I get whenever my sons return to Atlanta to spend time with their dad. I usually come up with some smart aleck comment that brings a smile. But in reality, this summer I do miss them a little more than usual. You see, at 12 and 14, each has developed a wicked sense of humor and when it comes to basic politics, they get it. They're far more interesting now than they were a couple of years ago.
There's something else I HAD been missing. Time to myself. As a divorced mom, I don't have the backup that a spouse is rumored to provide. When a kid needs to go to baseball or soccer practice, I'm responsible for getting him there (shout-out to my wonderful coaches). I'm the only one taking the day off for emergencies and making stops at the store for "we're out of's" ...
So, while they've been gone, there have been times when I've lazed around and done nothing. I've enjoyed an adult beverage or two while watching movies that had some cussin' and fussin.' I've caught up on some reading and made time for friends. I've made a pledge to myself to do more nothing.
Do I miss the boys? Sure I do, but they don't have to rush back on my account. The love is here when they're gone and it'll be here when they get back, along with those Little Debbie snack cakes that haven't been touched since they left.
