Zhu Zhu Pets still playing possum
As we reported earlier this month, Zhu Zhu Pets -- the fake hamster hot toy of 2009 -- are still playing possum.
I spoke to the New York Times last week about my experience trying to hunt the elusive Zhu Zhu back in October. Both online and local retailers were completely sold out, and the only toys available were on Amazon.com and eBay for a whopping $35 rather than the $7.99-$9.99 price tag advertised at the major toy stores.
Although store shelves remain empty today, a few things have changed. Instead of signs that read, “Limit 4 Zhu Zhu Pets per customer per day,” Toys-R-Us and Target now limit you to just one. (Not that it matters much since there are none available.) And Amazon prices now start at $45 and up.
The manufacturer, Cepia, has been overwhelmed by the demand, and hopes to replenish store shelves before Christmas, but cannot confirm specific shipment dates to all markets according to the Martz agency, the PR firm handling the toy launch.
So Black Friday may or may not be this mock hamster’s Groundhog Day -- you just might catch a glimpse of this guy’s shadow at your local toy store or it’s going to be even a longer winter for the little ones who want them.
