Child fights off abductor at Walmart

You probably have seen the video of 7-year-old Brittney Baxter fighting off a would-be kidnapper in the toy aisle of the Bremen, Ga., Walmart. What's also shocking is all the judgey people coming out of the woodwork questioning why the mother would let her kids play in the toy aisle while she shopped.

Once again, the Free Range Kids blog has the best answer to the hysteria around this case. This little girl did exactly what she was supposed to do – kick and scream. The message from this should not be that it’s never safe to leave your child unattended, but that you should focus on teaching your kids how to stand up for themselves. Here's Lenore Skanazy's take on it: ... Read more

Can Komen recover from grant furor?

komen.jpgNews is breaking today that the woman who was thought to have been behind Susan G. Komen for the Cure's move to defund Planned Parenthood grants has resigned.

Karen Handel, the charity’s vice president for public policy, told Komen officials that she supported the move to cut off funding for Planned Parenthood. She said the discussion started before she arrived at the organization and was approved at the highest levels of the charity.

“I am deeply disappointed by the gross mischaracterizations of the strategy, its rationale, and my involvement in it,” Handel said in her letter. “I openly acknowledge my role in the matter and continue to believe our decision was the best one for Komen’s future and the women we serve.”

Think this will help? I doubt it since the fury over this decision doesn't seem to be subsiding. Having done many of these races including the first one in the Tampa Bay area in 1999, I find this so sad. Running those races was an awesome feeling, like girl power in action.

Synthetic pot eludes police crackdown

jazz.jpgPot is illegal. Imitators of marijuana, like those shown at left, are sold in convenience stores.

That's a frustration for police, our colleagues Will Hobson and Drew Harwell report here today. Pinellas Sheriff Bob Gualtieri compares the fight to the arcade game Whac-A-Mole, because as soon as the state outlaws one compound used for fake pot, manufacturers come up with a new recipe. ... Should family tree overrule child's bond with foster family?

jjfamily.jpgIt's really heart-breaking to read this story today from our colleague Leonora LaPeter Anton about a judge forced to decide whether a boy who has lived and bonded with his foster parents for about two years should stay with them or be placed with a great-great-aunt he hardly knows. As Anton points out, the law is a good one to try to keep families together.

She writes: Family Finders, which in Hillsborough, Hernando and several other counties is funded by a federal grant, has produced heartwarming stories. A pair of teen boys reconnected in Texas with their father, who they thought had died. A toddler whose mother was in jail went to an older cousin in Tampa. A 9-year-old boy whose mother overdosed was placed with a Kentucky aunt within 72 hours. ... Read more

Doctors urged to consider ADHD in preschoolers

ritalin.jpgThe American Academy of Pediatrics has revised its ADHD treatment guidelines, giving doctors a green light to prescribe drugs even to preschoolers if behavioral efforts fail. It should be noted, however that AAP urges parents and physicians to first try behavioral interventions, such as group or individual parent training. The panel said emerging evidence makes it possible to diagnose and manage ADHD in children from ages 4 to 18 (the previous AAP guidelines, from 2001, covered children ages 6 to 12). ... Read more

Law would make Halloween always on Saturday

carved_pumpkins.jpgAll the parents who plan to race home from work Monday to throw a fast dinner together before shuffling kids out the door to trick-or-treat will likely be chearing on Rep. Tim Larson of Connecticut.  He made the news last week with his idea to get his state to declare Halloween to be held "officially" on the last Saturday of October, regardless of the date.

It’s difficult for parents to get their sugar-saturated trick-or-treaters off to bed in time for school the next morning, he said. Moving the festivities to a Saturday would also enable the younger children to kick off their trick-or-treating earlier in the day when visibility is better.

Having just had three years when it fell on weekend nights, I have to say this idea is very appealing. ... Read more

Mom runs marathon, gives birth on same day

miller.jpgThe news on Sunday that the very pregnant Amber Miller (39 weeks along) competed in the Chicago Marathon, and later that day delivered a 7 pounds, 13 ounces girl, has sparked a good debate about how much exercise is healthy for a pregnant woman. Aside from the fact that this woman finished 26.2 miles with a very respectable time of 6:25:50 -- half of it walking while feeling contractions coming on! -- people are upset at Miller for other reasons, too.

Miller said her doctor told her to stay nourished and hydrated going into the Chicago race, and to make sure she could maintain a conversation, which would help keep her from losing her breath. ... Read more

The latest budget victims: children's playgrounds

playground.jpgInstead of repairing or replacing playgrounds, the city of Clearwater, strapped by budget cuts, is tearing them down. As our colleague Drew Harwell reports here, nine of the city's 34 playgrounds were destroyed within the last five years, city records show. Five more are scheduled for demolition by 2019.

City parks and recreation director Kevin Dunbar defended the demolition  as a safety measure. The playground equipment in one case was 17 years old — past a playground's "typical lifespan" of 12 to 15 years, city spokeswoman Joelle Castelli said. Replacing it would have cost between $50,000 and $75,000.

How sad is this? Sure they are saving repair money, but the initial investment is thrown down the toilet. To rebuild those playgrounds later I would imagine would be much costlier than the repair bill. ... Read more

Have you talked to your kids about 9/11?

911debris.jpgA friend of mine recently asked me what age I told my kids about the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and it occurred to me that I never did make the first step to introduce that topic. They learned about it in school. My oldest was only 3 when the planes when into the World Trade Center and in addition to being traumatized like the rest of the country, I wanted to shield that little guy from such scary news.

It's not my finest parenting hour to admit that I never did introduce the topic as he got older. It was only when watching the news one day that he chimed in that they had talked about the 9/11 anniversary at school when he was in second or third grade. My younger one has suffered the same neglect. I just haven't brought the topic up very much because I will admit, I don't want to give the kid nightmares about planes and people wanting to kill us. But he knows about it too, also thanks to his teachers. ... Read more

Divorce fight turns into free speech case

Divorce can be horrific and when there are kids involved, the bitterness has to lie under a blanket of child protection. Anthony Morelli was so frustrated with his divorce, he launched a blog called "The Psycho Ex Wife." For four years, he wrote about his nasty divorce with his ex and provided a community for people tangled up in fierce custody battles and gave plenty of scathing descriptions of his "PEW" as he calls her.

I thought it was no surprise that a judge ordered Morelli to take his site down, arguing that "your children are being hurt because you are bad mouthing the woman they love in public." But Morelli doesn't agree and many lawyers actually take his side that this is turning into a free speech case.  A new site, SaveThePsychoExWife.com, is now linked to the homepage of The Psycho Ex-Wife. The new site argues: ... Read more

Freelance writer Courtney Cairns Pastor wasn’t so sure about having kids and how she would balance child-rearing with her journalism career. It turned out that her journalism training went to good use. As the mom to a funny, active toddler, she learned to handle him like she did her sources. Never ask yes or no questions (the answer will always be no), get him to be specific (are you crying because you’re wet or your tooth hurts?) and be prepared for anything because no two days are the same. When she’s not playing trucks, Courtney crams for her book club, trains for races and occasionally bursts into showtunes. E-mail her at courtneyblogs@gmail.com.
