Mommas should care about themselves as much as their kids
Would it help to confess that months ago, I moved into the fat side of my closet?
Or would it still be ugly to quote from this email from a parents' group at my kids' school?
"I will be ordering the navy blue (club name) polo shirts this year. These shirts will be embroidered on the front and the (club name) theme will be on the back of the shirts. The shirts are a wonderful way to show support for your talented (club name) son or daughter...
"The shirts come in Men's and Women's sizes: XS, Small, Med., Large & XLarge. These shirts are $17. The larger sizes: XXL are $19 and each additional X will be an additional dollar. For example: XXXL = $20; XXXXL = $21 - these sizes go up to 10XL for men and 6XL for women."

Mary Poppins will make your son an adulterer
According to a British doctor, us Mommas who hire a nanny to help with our boys are turning them into future adulterers. Dr. ... Read more
Maybe those video games CAN teach your kids something
Like millions of other folks this weekend, my family and I have been watching parts of the Olympic Winter Games taking place in Vancouver. We've seen some ski jumping, moguls skiing and speed skating. On Sunday night, I learned something ... Read more
Mommas will love this response to anti-woman Dodge Charger Super Bowl ad
Although there were plenty of opinions about what was the best ad during the Super Bowl last week, nearly everyone agreed that the worst was the misogynistic one for Dodge Charger. (You can see it here if you missed it or have forgotten how terrible it was.)
The ad presented a poor, put-upon man (voiced by "Dexter" star Michael C. Hall, giving it an extra creepy vibe) talking about all the awful, emasculating stuff he has to do to make his wife/girlfriend happy, and in exchange he gets to drive whatever the heck he wants to compensate.
Now filmmaker MacKenzie Fegan has created a hilarious response video that will resonate strongly with all of us Mommas (warning -- some language is NSFW):

Who controls a pregnant woman's body -- her or her doctors?
The question is one you hear all the time during debates over abortion: Who controls a pregnant woman's body? Under current law, a woman has the right to make her own decisions about what happens to her body and her baby, right? Surely even Tim Tebow would agree with that, right? ... Read more
Some parents say they won't leave restaurants, stores when their kids start throwing tantrums
We've all had it happen to us: A kid has a meltdown in public. You are in the line to pay for groceries and he's losing it. Your entree has just arrived and she wigs out. We all know that tantrums require an audience and ignoring them is a good way in the long run to get them to stop because they don't work. But in the meantime, you gotta get some groceries or you finally have some dinner served, what do you do? Other people want to shop in peace or enjoy their dinner, too. ... Read more
Stressed-out kids doing drugs? Stop reaching for that crutch
So this story in the St. Petersburg Times last week gave me quite a start: The student paper at Lakewood High School surveyed the kids there about using drugs. The editor said they figured they would find that peer pressure was the driving force behind drug use. But instead the students said they used drugs to cope with all the stress they were dealing with. ... Read more
"No gifts, please" on birthday invite
He's my child, not my grandson!
I knew it would happen someday, but not this soon.
I was in the checkout line at my favorite grocery with my nearly 3-year-old son, who loves to help put the food on the conveyor belt. He calls it "checking 'em out with the ladies," even if there's a guy ringing up our stuff.
The belt was broken so it made it harder for him to do his thing. I was having to move items toward the register.
The cashier looked at my son and out it came.
"That's nice of you, helping out your grandma."
I responded immediately.
"Uh, I'm mom." ... Read more
Summer camp horror story No. 1
The other day my husband picked up my 8-year-old daughter from summer day camp with the city of Tampa Parks and Recreation. She was withdrawn, upset and pale.
Turns out, she says that she and a friend had been threatened by another 8-year-old, upset about some problem with the computer. As my daughter tells it, the girl said: "You better tell your friend to watch it, because I've got a knife in my backpack and I'm going to get it and stab her." ... Read more
