Mommas should care about themselves as much as their kids

mom_overweightwoman.jpgWould it help to confess that months ago, I moved into the fat side of my closet?

Or would it still be ugly to quote from this email from a parents' group at my kids' school?

"I will be ordering the navy blue (club name) polo shirts this year. These shirts will be embroidered on the front and the (club name) theme will be on the back of the shirts. The shirts are a wonderful way to show support for your talented (club name) son or daughter...

"The shirts come in Men's and Women's sizes: XS, Small, Med., Large & XLarge. These shirts are $17. The larger sizes: XXL are $19 and each additional X will be an additional dollar. For example: XXXL = $20; XXXXL = $21 - these sizes go up to 10XL for men and 6XL for women."

Maybe those video games CAN teach your kids something

Like millions of other folks this weekend, my family and I have been watching parts of the Olympic Winter Games taking place in Vancouver. We've seen some ski jumping, moguls skiing and speed skating. On Sunday night, I learned something ... Read more

Mommas will love this response to anti-woman Dodge Charger Super Bowl ad

Although there were plenty of opinions about what was the best ad during the Super Bowl last week, nearly everyone agreed that the worst was the misogynistic one for Dodge Charger. (You can see it here if you missed it or have forgotten how terrible it was.)

The ad presented a poor, put-upon man (voiced by "Dexter" star Michael C. Hall, giving it an extra creepy vibe) talking about all the awful, emasculating stuff he has to do to make his wife/girlfriend happy, and in exchange he gets to drive whatever the heck he wants to compensate.

Now filmmaker MacKenzie Fegan has created a hilarious response video that will resonate strongly with all of us Mommas (warning -- some language is NSFW):

Who controls a pregnant woman's body -- her or her doctors?

Mom_pregnant The question is one you hear all the time during debates over abortion: Who controls a pregnant woman's body? Under current law, a woman has the right to make her own decisions about what happens to her body and her baby, right? Surely even Tim Tebow would agree with that, right? ... Read more

Some parents say they won't leave restaurants, stores when their kids start throwing tantrums

Mom_tantrumkid We've all had it happen to us: A kid has a meltdown in public. You are in the line to pay for groceries  and he's losing it. Your entree has just arrived and she wigs out. We all know that tantrums require an audience and ignoring them is a good way in the long run to get them to stop because they don't work. But in the meantime, you gotta get some groceries or you finally have some dinner served, what do you do? Other people want to shop in peace or enjoy their dinner, too. ... Read more

Stressed-out kids doing drugs? Stop reaching for that crutch

Mom_marijuana So this story in the St. Petersburg Times last week gave me quite a start: The student paper at Lakewood High School surveyed the kids there about using drugs. The editor said they figured they would find that peer pressure was the driving force behind drug use. But instead the students said they used drugs to cope with all the stress they were dealing with. ... Read more

"No gifts, please" on birthday invite

Mom_birthdaygifts

We recently received a birthday party invitation that included a plea of "No gifts, please, your presence is present enough." I was delighted, but a friend of mine who got the same invitation thought it was rude. She also thinks gift registries are rude because that's like begging for a gift, so she thinks the opposite is also true. A gift is voluntary and to even make a plea for or against them is rude, she maintains. ... Read more

He's my child, not my grandson!

I knew it would happen someday, but not this soon.

Mom_mychild I was in the checkout line at my favorite grocery with my nearly 3-year-old son, who loves to help put the food on the conveyor belt. He calls it "checking 'em out with the ladies," even if there's a guy ringing up our stuff.

The belt was broken so it made it harder for him to do his thing. I was having to move items toward the register.

The cashier looked at my son and out it came.

"That's nice of you, helping out your grandma."

I responded immediately.

"Uh, I'm mom." ... Read more

Summer camp horror story No. 1

Mom_sadgirl The other day my husband picked up my 8-year-old daughter from summer day camp with the city of Tampa Parks and Recreation. She was withdrawn, upset and pale.

Turns out, she says that she and a friend had been threatened by another 8-year-old, upset about some problem with the computer. As my daughter tells it, the girl said: "You better tell your friend to watch it, because I've got a knife in my backpack and I'm going to get it and stab her." ... Read more

THE AUTHORS

Sharon Kennedy Wynne has sunscreen in her blood. She may have been born in Buffalo but she got here as fast as she could, in time for kindergarten. She grew up in St. Petersburg, graduated from the University of Florida journalism school, and even got married at Sunken Gardens. She's one of the few adults we know who actually loves taking her kids to the beach. She has two sons and with 10 years of parenting under her belt, she's starting to feel a little less out of her league. She comes from a large family and loves to debate, so brace yourself when the hot topics come up.

SP_255665_CROS_KATE.jpgAfter six long years of trying to have a baby, Kate Brassfield was finally able to have one. And then, two minutes later, another one. Suddenly the lady who had never been around babies before was juggling two! Just as Kate felt she was getting pretty good with babies, the girls became toddlers, and now Kate is back to Square One, learning about the care and feeding of these strange, wonderful creatures. She spends her days working part-time from home and trying to keep up with the Twinosaurus Wrecks.

Freelance writer Courtney Cairns Pastor wasn’t so sure about having kids and how she would balance child-rearing with her journalism career. It turned out that her journalism training went to good use. As the mom to a funny, active toddler, she learned to handle him like she did her sources. Never ask yes or no questions (the answer will always be no), get him to be specific (are you crying because you’re wet or your tooth hurts?) and be prepared for anything because no two days are the same. When she’s not playing trucks, Courtney crams for her book club, trains for races and occasionally bursts into showtunes. E-mail her at courtneyblogs@gmail.com.

Suzannah DiMarzio has it bad for the Mouse. Although she grew up outside of Boston, she took her degree in tourism management down to Orlando just to work at Disney and the travel industry. Of course, when she married her high school sweetheart, the reception was at Disney. She’s now a seasoned stay-at-home mom to two tweens and a toddler – and yes, that is as crazy as it sounds. Suzannah has her own blog, ZannaLand.com , and she's a member of the Walt Disney World Moms Panel in addition to being addicted to Twitter, iced coffee, and watching way too much Yo, Gabba Gabba.
