'Drag Me to Hell': Drag me back to this movie

Caught Sam Raimi's return to spine-tingling, rib-tickling terror last night and wasn't disappointed. Drag Me to Hell, opening Friday, is packed with clever jolts and squirmy moments (check out the clip posted above for an example ... ewwwwww).

But Raimi's smartest moves are when he shows little at all besides shadows. He knows an audience can imagine things far worse than anyone can splatter onscreen. In fact, the closest thing to gore in Drag Me to Hell is a comical bloody nose. It's a full-length version of what is essentially a Tales from the Crypt comic book yarn, with Alison Lohman as a loan officer who forecloses on a old gypsy woman and gets a damnation curse in return. Nothing should be taken seriously in the movie, except the giddy feeling of being manipulated by a master.

I need to get cracking on the review that'll be posted online later. Also have a morning screening of the documentary Every Little Step, chronicling the creation and revival of the Broadway smash, A Chorus Line.

That could get as scary as Raimi's flick.
