Movie Review Intelligence and me
Well, that's a phrase that some folks don't expect to read, especially the Black Devil Doll audience at Wednesday's screening in St. Petersburg. Sorry that I couldn't make it, but someone had to stay home and cheer for Adam Lambert on American Idol since his peeps were grossing out at Nova 535. (He does resemble a schlocky serial killer, doesn't he?)
Anyway, I received a call yesterday from David Gross, a former marketing executive at Twentieth Century Fox, HBO, Disney and MGM/UA. We've spoken on a couple of occasions before, when he called to inquire about gaining access to my reviews. Said some flattering things about my stuff, which is nice. I didn't know what the interest was all about until now.
Gross has created a new Web site called MovieReviewIntelligence.com in response to the increasingly amateurish blather being accepted on Rotten Tomatoes, and the superficial clearinghouse style of Metacritic. Living in L.A. with his Hollywood connections, Gross thought studios needed a more thorough database of reviewers from the best publications in North America.
"There's this feeling out here that critics are out of touch with the public, that simply isn't true," Gross said.
Gross' site links to 65 film critics at newspapers in the United States and Canada -- including moi -- plus magazines, alternative weeklies, National Public Radio and the syndicated TV show At the Movies.
"These media and critics have been selected because they are the most influential and representative of their kind, as measured by the size of their readership and audience," the Web site states. "These are the critics and this is the body of reviews that moviegoers are seeing, reading and hearing."
But going beyond the typical recitiation of opinions, MovieReviewIntellgence.com breaks down the size of these markets and classifies the tastes of their readers. It's a complicated sytem that is explained here.
Bottom line, the site is intended as an industry tool more than a consumer crutch. But even casual moviegoers can find a few minutes of interesting browsing. You'll probably find out things about this business that you never considered before. It's flattering to be included. Check it out.
