The 'bots can rust and rest easily: Harry Potter can't beat their opening weekend record
The boy wizard turned teen wizard (and middle-aged wizard by the time the series concludes) Harry Potter (and his Half-Blood Prince) raked in $159.7 million at domestic box offices since debuting Wednesday, according to Hollywood reporter.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen earned $201 million a couple of weeks ago for the record over the same day span.
In an unusual display of good sense at the box office, Sacha Baron Cohen's Bruno finished fourth in the rankings after being No. 1 last weekend with $8.3 million, according to BoxOfficeGuru.com. That's an embarrassing 73 percent drop-off from its $30.6 million opening.
Interesting that the two biggest flops of the summer movie season had publicity-hungry stars (Cohen, Will Ferrell of Land of the Lost) who overexposed themselves -- literally, in Cohen's case -- before the flicks debuted. Even mediocre movies can make solid bank, if moviegoers don't think they've already seen the best parts of them.
