The best movie trailers of all time?
The late, great film critic Gene Siskel once told me that he hated preview trailers. They reveal too much, he complained, so if a screening included previews he would shut his eyes and cover his ears.
Not me. I would prefer two hours of trailers over maybe half of the full-length movies I see.
That's why I'm loving this list of the top 50 preview trailers of all time, compiled by writers for the Independent Film Channel and ready to spark debate. It proves that good previews don't guarantee good movies (see: Night of the Iguana, The Minus Man and The Strangers), and classics such as Dr. Strangelove, Schindler's List and Pulp Fiction could be spotted right off the bat.
There's even one for a movie that hasn't been released yet: Spike Jonze's adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are, set to debut Oct. 16. I've started you off with IFC's No. 1, Aliens.
Check 'em out. Then tell me some of your favorite movie trailers of all time. Maybe we'll put together a mini-festival on tampabay.com with your choices. Just don't step on my Friday Fromage turf. Enjoy!
