Florida Film Critics Circle goes Up in the Air while airlines are grounded

While eastern U.S. airports are clogged with impatient travelers, the Florida Film Critics Circle checked their bags with Jason Reitman's dramedy Up in the Air, voting it three prizes including best picture of 2009.

George Clooney was named best actor for his portrayal of an emotionally detached frequent flier learning to stay grounded. Reitman was named best director.

A tie initially in the best screenplay balloting -- between Up in the Air and (500) Days of Summer -- forced a second round of voting with the edge going to Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber's new wave romantic comedy.

Precious earned two awards for its stars, best actress Gabourey Sibide and supporting actress Mo'Nique. Christophe Waltz of Inglourious Basterds was voted the year's best supporting actor. Sibide also won a special prize for 2009's best breakout in movies.

The immigration drama Sin Nombre was voted best foreign language film, Up was named best animated film, and The Cove earned best documentary honors. Avatar's Mauro Fiore was honored for the year's best cinematography.

Sixteen Sunshine State film critics -- including yours truly -- participated in the voting.
