Nomadic Tendencies Film Festival roams into six Pinellas County locations, Sept. 3-12

The Nomadic Tendencies Film Festival really lives up to its name. This roving independent cinema showcase -- an off-shoot of the currently running Strasbourg International Film Festival -- has bounced around Tampa Bay for months drumming up interest in its 10-day festival Sept. 3-12 at six -- count 'em -- six Pinellas County venues.

Movies will be shown free of charge at the University of South Florida-Bayboro's campus activity center, ArtOn Central in downtown St. Petersburg and the Blueberry Patch in Gulfport. Screenings at Dali Museum require a regular admission ticket, museum membership or festival pass. Films at Muvico BayWalk 20 and Beach Theatre will charge for tickets.

Here are some of the festival's highligted offerings -- 140 films films are expected to be shown --  described in detail in a news release with show dates and times:

The Cutting Tradition (Health/Social/ Women’s Issues Documentary, 47 mins -- Ethiopia, United Kingdom, Burkina Faso, Djibouti, Egypt) This moving and sensitive documentary highlights, in a non judgemental way, the complex social, religious, cultural and economic issues which underpin the ongoing practice of female genital mutilation, or FGM. This film deliberately raises questions that are critical in understanding why FGM continues to be very common to this day in both rich and poor communities, despite being illegal in many countries of origin. It is estimated that up to 140 million women and girls have already undergone some form of female genital mutilation with a further three million added annually. Filmed in five countries, Burkina Faso, Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia and the UK. Narrated by 2x Oscar Winning Actress Meryl Streep. Screening at Muvico Baywalk 20 in St Petersburg on Monday, Sept 6 at 10:00am as part of Short Docs (1): About Family, Life & Tradition & Saturday, Sept 11 at 4:00pm as part of Short Docs (3): People & Culture (Meryl Streep).

Screening as part of Shorts: Romance at Muvico Baywalk 20 on Sunday, Sept 12 at 8:00pm.

Quantum Quest (Family/SciFi Fantasy Animation, 50 mins -- USA) Quantum Quest: A Cassini Space Odyssey is CGI, 3D, science fiction, action-adventure film which interweaves animated sequences with actual space imagery captured from seven ongoing NASA/ESA missions. Its family-friendly tale focuses on a photon named Dave and his heroic efforts to save his people, who are caught in a galactic battle between the forces of good and evil. The film takes a unique and entertaining approach to science education by creating characters which embody scientific concepts and discoveries, making the movie fun as well as informative. Voices include Amanda Peet, Samuel L Jackson, James Earl Jones, Sandra Oh, William Shatner, Mark Hamill, Jason Alexander and Neil Armstrong. The Double (Drama, 24 mins -- USA, Student film UCLA School of Film and Television) Meet Steven Roberts (Eric Roberts), a self-assured psychologist concerned less with his family and more with the promotion of his new book, the ironically-titled 'Deepening Our Connection to Others.'
