Read Tom Marshall's article, "Feds want schools to lay off the junk food," in today's St. Petersburg Times. Marshall writes: "The federal bill brought cheers from Tampa Bay school nutrition directors. It is said to include $1 billion in extra money to pay for more of the fruits, vegetables and whole grains that make teenagers cringe."
According to the article, Pasco County officials have already removed junk food from school vending machines. In Pinellas schools, the decision is left up to the school principals. In Hernando County, junk food items are available after school. In Hillsborough, vending machines are turned off during school breakfast and lunch.
