A small glimmer of hope and happiness shines on Tampa Bay, in light of the continuing doom and gloom from the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Several endangered Brown Pelicans, which had been rescued and cleaned of oil and debris, were released off the coast of Ft. DeSoto County Park on Thursday while Fish & Wildlife officers looked on. The birds immediately took flight or waddled into the water, sporting new colored ankle bands for future identification, now free of oil and able to live in a non-toxic environment. While there is no guarantee that the birds will recover completely, it is hoped that they will stay in Tampa Bay and begin a new family colony here.
