ALBUM REVIEW: Miley Cyrus, Ke$ha sing Bob Dylan...and not terribly!
Album: Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan (Amnesty International USA)
Why we care: Benefiting Amnesty International USA, this 76-song Bob-a-palooza invites a crazy-wide spectrum of the pop world to take a whack at covering Mr. Robert Zimmerman: from real singers such as Adele doing Make You Feel My Love (stellar, natch) to, um, other singers such as Miley Cyrus twanging out a pickin’-party You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go (not bad!) ... PODCAST! Madge at the Bowl, Ferris II and the 'Truth' about Van Halen's new album
Because we love, because we care, because we need somewhere to unload our crappy jokes, Spearsy and I slipped into Stuck in the '80s studios post-SB to record a bonus 'cast for you and yours. Turns out we disagree on Madonna, Ferris and Van Halen. And we usually get along so well. Weird.
ALBUM REVIEW: Van Halen, 'A Different Kind of Truth' GRADE: B+
The new Van Halen album is called A Different Kind of Truth, but the dumb, delicious truth is that it's the same kind of randy metallic thrust the boys unloaded while rebelling against the starched-collar Reagan administration. All these years later, nothing's different at all, and bless them for their failure to grow into responsible adults.
On its first full-length LP since 1984, Van Halen's almost-original lineup returns for a high-flyin', overwrought good time: motormouth David Lee Roth, guitar god Eddie Van Halen and psychotic drummer Alex Van Halen, with Ed's kid Wolfgang taking over Michael Anthony's role as Chewbaccian bass player.
TV: Lovin', touchin', squeezin' in Safety Harbor
ABC Action News camerahunk Frank Barrera and I had a rollicking good time at Safety Harbor's Touch-a-Truck shindig on Saturday. Sometimes live shoots don't really come together. Other times, live shoots include... makeshift rec-league rappers? Ya never know. ENJOY THE VIDEOS.
CONCERT REVIEW: The Civil Wars at the Straz Center, Tampa, Feb. 2
TAMPA — If whimsically twisted director Tim Burton ever made a western, the band playing in the dusty saloon would be the Civil Wars. Not just because the alt-country duo's male counterpart looks like Burton fave Johnny Depp. No, John Paul White and Joy Williams are pretty and sweet, dark and darkly comic. They are also, seemingly, not of this time and place.
In a cozy, and very sold-out, Ferguson Hall at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, 1,042 fans showed up, and stood up, for one of the most buzz-worthy bands in the country. Taylor Swift calls the Southern Gothic pairing her new favorite act, an endorsement that has helped the acoustic-based duo garner good ink. Swift also had the Civil Wars back her up on ornate new single Safe & Sound from The Hunger Games soundtrack. As a result, it's one of Swift's most mature, emotionally rich — and gloomy — tunes yet. ... Read more

New Jack White song 'Love Interruption'
Finally lifting all aliases and rocking under his own name, Jack White will release his first solo album, "Blunderbuss," on April 24. Here's predictable bluesy, but predictably cool-as-hell, first single 'Love Interruption.'
SD's top 5 Feb shows in Tampa Bay: Radiohead, Civil Wars, Kelly Clarkson, Diana Ross, Richard Thompson
Ah yes, February, le mois d'amour, 29 days of kissing, hugging, sobbing, failed expectations and last-minute Valentine's Day gifts from CVS. ("But baby, we're going to drink this 12-pack of Yoo-Hoo together.") In keeping with the theme of love, love, love, the latest installment of Top Shows in Tampa Bay is dedicated to music of the heart and heartbroken: Diana Ross' Stop! In the Name of Love, Kelly Clarkson's Since U Been Gone, Radiohead's I Might Be Wrong. Feel free to sing along — or quietly sob in a corner.
TV: Gasparilla shenanigans with Gov. Rick Scott and AG Pam Bondi
I have no idea why I'm blowing a raspberry at Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi.
But apparently Florida Gov. Rick Scott finds the whole thing hi-larious.
This is not one of my finer journalistic moments.
In related news, pirate makeup sucks.
Behold, Gasparilla 2012.
