Taylor Swift calls up the MJ Morning Show...and then all hell breaks loose
Well...that could have gone better.
Todd "MJ" Schnitt, the morning radio star on Tampa Bay's WFLZ-FM 93.3, scored a choice phone interview with Taylor Swift this morning. It was a potentially great get, seeing as how the country singer has been News Item #1 since Sunday, when her acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards was infamously interrupted by Kanye West. Swift won best female video for You Belong With Me; West thought Beyonce's Single Ladies vid should have taken the trophy...and he let the world know about it.
So...as soon as Swift got on the line with MJ (she was late due to Nashville traffic), the jock asked: "Let's just get the Kanye West thing out of the way here."
Swift replied: "I think the outpouring of love is what I'm trying to focus on....Getting flowers from Janet Jackson is something I'd never thought would happen in my life."
MJ asked Swift to go over what exactly happened. With a sigh, Swift said, "It was definitely a very exciting night....It happened on TV and everyone saw what happened....I guess I'd just like to move on a little bit."
MJ was having none of that and made a very good point: Swift's already skyrocketing career was given yet another great boost from the Kanye incident. But Swift said: "I think that maybe we should probably talk about something else."
MJ: "It's good for your career though."
Swift: "I really would like to move on. I've asked you three times now."
MJ: "One more question and I promise I'll move on."
At that point, a handler from Big Machine, Swift's label, jumped on the line, quickly thanked the deejay and that was it.
Interview over.
Everyone was cordial enough, but needless to say, Schnitt was not happy. Immediately after the interview, MJ's phone lines lit up with callers supporting the way he handled Swift. In his defense, Swift and Big Machine -- who had a full slate of interviews today -- are crazy if they think they're not going to hear the Kanye question another 100 times.
