Witasick in; Lugo out ...
The Rays formalized the makeover of their bullpen by signing veteran RHP Jay Witasick on Tuesday as expected.
But the surprise move was that to make room for Witasick on the 40-man roster they designated for assignment RHP Ruddy Lugo, who had been pitching at Triple-A Durham after opening the season in the majors.
That's because RHP Tim Corcoran, who seemed likely to be the one to go, was instead placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow strain. RHP Jason Hammel was called up on Monday and RHP Chad Orvella was optioned to Triple-A.
It appears B.J. Upton is again not available to play. He is not in the lineup and said he needs a couple more days to recover from the left quad strain that sidelined him since Friday. Manager Joe Maddon said Upton should play by Friday at the latest.
