Zobrist out a month; cuts made
The Rays have another troubling injury concern as INF Ben Zobrist sustained a fractured left thumb in Sunday's game and will be out a month.
Zobrist was being groomed for a key super-utility role, as well as being the backup shortstop, and the Rays are hoping he can return by mid-April. The Rays don't have an obvious alternative for the super-utility role, but Andy Cannizaro is the likely frontrunner to make the team as the backup shortstop. The Rays also could consider promoting prospect Reid Brignac.
Executive VP Andrew Friedman also said the Rays should have a more definitive update on the status of OF Rocco Baldelli by midweek.
Also, the Rays made their first roster cuts of the spring, reassigning to minor-league camp RHP Wade Davis, LHP Jake McGee and C Matt Spring and optioning out OF Fernando Perez, LHP James Houser and C John Jaso.
