Rays leftfielder Carl Crawford, recovering from Aug. 14 right hand surgery, appeared pain-free during a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates' fall instructional league team today at Tropicana Field.
Crawford, batting in each of the first five innings, went 0-for-4 and was hit by a pitch. He stole a base and scored a run.
The game, the first of potentially several for Crawford with the Rays instructional league squad, will help determine his chances of returning to the lineup for the Rays' playoff opener on Thursday.
Crawford took batting practice this morning and hit 72 pitches. He was chatting with teammates and appeared fine, from all indications.
