Crawford rehab Day 2: More like it

Rays LF Carl Crawford went 2-for-3 in his second rehab assignment at Tropicana Field this morning as he attempts to come back from finger surgery and earn a spot on the playoff roster.

Crawford tripled off the right-center field wall in his first at-bat against Phillies instructional league players and scored on the play on a throwing error. Crawford singled to left in the second inning and was caught stealing. He did return to play left field, took off the third inning and returned to left for the fourth. Instructional League games - by design - are liberal in their substitution and player usage rules.

Crawford struck out looking on a 3-2 pitch against a left-hander in the fourth and did not return. Head trainer Ron Porterfield told Rays officials in the stands he was done for the day and felt fine.

Crawford went 0-for-4 yesterday, with a HBP, stolen base and run, also at Tropicana Field. Crawford's first-inning liner Tuesday off former big-leaguer Doug Drabek's son, Kyle, short-hopped the wall and he was in full sprint halfway to second base.

Crawford could play another instructional league game on Wednesday.
