Rays owner Stuart Sternberg spoke to reporters for about 10 minutes by the Rays dugout early this afternoon.

Surrounded by about 40 reporters, Sternberg said he was pleased with increasing ticket sales this year, but said ticket sales need to increase next year. He said he hopes the team's performance this year will prompt better ticket sales in 2009.

"I do expect a pickup in attendance next year," he said.

Asked whether he expected that the Rays could compete against the big-market Yankees and Red Sox to get to this point, Sternberg said: "We felt pretty confident if we stuck to our plan and got a few breaks we had a window between 2008 and 2011 for success. We thought we had a four-year window to make some noise."
