Bogar hired by Red Sox
Tim Bogar, the Rays quality assurance coach, has been hired by the Red Sox to be their first base coach.
"It's a great honor not only to join the Red Sox organization but to work with a manager of (Terry Francona's) stature," Bogar said in a conference call. "Hopefully I'll bring something to (Francona's) staff that can help. It was a great process. I really enjoyed going through it."
In his role as assistant last season, Bogar, 44, worked on advance series preparation, as well as dealing with infield defense and baserunning.
Bogar played nine seasons in the major leagues (Mets 1993-96), Astros (1997-2000) and Dodgers (2001), mostly as shortstop, but has played all the infield positions, as well as the outfield. He also spent four years as minor league manager before joining the Rays.
