UPDATE, 6:13: The gaps were not very big in the two unresolved cases. According to figures obtained by the Associated Press, Navarro filed for $2.5-million while the Rays offered $2.1-million, and Aybar sought $1,050,000 while the Rays offered $900,000.


UPDATE, 3:10:  Senior VP Gerry Hunsicker said the Rays will not break from their policy and will hold no further negotiations with Aybar and Navarro. "I do not see a situation where we would waver, it's our policy.''

As for not reaching agreement, Hunsicker said: "I can't say that I'm surprised, just disappointed.''

The Rays did not reach agreement with INF Willy Aybar and C Dioner Navarro by their self-imposed deadline meaning they are headed to arbitration hearings next month.

Under Rays policy, they end negotiations at the time figures are exchanged, which was noon Tuesday.

Navarro, an All-Star last season, looked to be in line to make $2- to $2.5-million, so it will be interesting to see what he filed for and what the Rays offered. Not reaching an agreement with Aybar is somewhat surprising; he seems to be in line for about $1-million.

"We were close, but we couldn't get the deal done,'' said Navarro's agent, Kendall Almerico. "I'm willing to continue to talk until the hearing, but that requires the Rays wanting to talk. My expectation is that we will be willing to be listen and they will not be willing to talk.''
