Rays sign Abreu - - - - Winston Abreu
The Rays are finalizing their spring training roster, with LHP Brian Shouse expected to be added on Monday when all results of his physical are in, and someone dropped to make room for him. As of now the overall spring roster stands at 60 players.
One new name on there is RHP Winston Abreu, a 31-year-old who pitched previously for the Orioles and Nationals, and spent last season in Japan. Abreu signed a minor-league deal.
Among other non-roster invitees of interest are minor-leaguer pitchers Jason Cromer, Neal Frontz, Carlos Hernandez and Calvin Medlock, plus Chad Orvella, who missed last season with an arm injury.
Invited position players include infielders Tim Beckham, the top pick in last year's draft, and Chris Nowak; and catchers Craig Albernaz, Nevin Ashley and Matt Spring.
The Rays officially open workouts on Feb. 15 at Charlotte Sports Park in Port Charlotte.
