Roster decisions still pending
Manager Joe Maddon said there was no news on the final roster moves, and won't be until Sunday, when the Rays have to submit their 25-man roster by 3 p.m.
So until then, there still are three pitchers - RHP Lance Cormier, RHP Jason Hammel and RHP Jeff Niemann - competing for the final two spots, though at this point they really aren't competing as the Rays know what each can do.
Cormier is here in Philadelphia, and it seems like he is in line to make the squad as a long reliever. If that's the case, then it's a matter of the Rays making the best deal they can for Hammel or Niemann, both of whom are scheduled to pitch in a minor-league intrasquad game on Sunday in Port Charlotte. Since all three are out of options they can't be sent to the minors without having to go through waivers.
"Nothing yet, sorry,'' Maddon said. "We're punting. How about Sunday? It's going to come down to Sunday, when those two fellas pitch. ... I'm just saying, be prepared to wait until Sunday on this.''
