Upton gets first spring homer, will play for Stone Crabs Thursday

CF B.J. Upton was a busy guy Sunday morning as a roving designated hitter, jogging between two fields to get as many at-bats as he could.

And he was pleased with how it all went. Upton went 4-for-12, with his first homer (off Andy Sonnanstine), two doubles and four RBI.

Upton said he's getting very "close" at the plate, just needs a little more work with the fastball. But by facing big-league caliber pitchers in Sonnanstine, Jeff Niemann and Jason Hammel, he was encouraged with how he felt at the plate.

"Everything is feeling better and better each day," Upton said. "I think every at-bat I took today got better. So I'm moving forward and definitely getting closer to ready....

Upton said he will play Thursday through Saturday with the Stone Crabs in Port Charlotte, and plans to rejoin the Rays for their home opener against the Yankees next Monday.
