RHP Jason Isringhausen was placed on the disabled list Saturday night due to an elbow injury suffered in the ninth inning, with the severity still unknown.
It didn’t look good when Isringhausen, 36, sailed a pitch way to the left of C Michel Hernandez with two outs in the ninth inning, and then immediately waved toward the dugout for assistance. Isringhausen, who had rehabbed all spring after an elbow surgery ended his season last year with the Cardinals, quickly left the field with a trainer and was replaced by RHP Lance Cormier. Manager Joe Maddon said Isringhausen felt something in his elbow, and will be examined. Isringhausen was unavailable for comment. “There’s concern,” Maddon said. “I don’t know what level, but there’s concern.”
To replace Isringhausen, RHP Winston Abreu’s contract was selected from Triple-A Durham. Abreu, 32, had pitched well for the Bulls, with 10 saves and a 1.41 ERA, striking out 49 and walking just 10 in 32 innings.
“You feel bad for the guy, and hope it’s not that bad,” said LHP reliever Randy Choate. “But when you pull yourself out of a game, obviously you know it’s not good.”
