Pedro a Ray? Unlikely
The reports that a Rays official attended a workout by Pedro Martinez in the Dominican Republic this week are true.
But the idea that he could soon be pitching for the Rays is apparently farfetched.
Word is that it is "very unlikely" anything will come out of it. The Rays have a number of staffers in the Dominican and one of them, who had a previous relationship with Martinez, did watch him throw.
According to the report out of the Dominican, Martinez threw 20 pitches during the workout - all fastballs - and will do so again.
Martinez, 37, is looking for job, and this may have been as much about getting his name out as anything. He was 5-6 with a 5.61 ERA in 20 starts for the Mets last season, and pitched in the WBC.
The story apparently first appeared on the listindiario.com web site. Here is a translated abbreviated version.
