Sonnanstine put on the DL in Durham
Right-hander Andy Sonnanstine, who had made two strong starts in Triple-A Durham since losing his spot in the Rays rotation, has been placed on the 7-day disabled list due to mononucleosis.
Sonnanstine, a mainstay in the Rays rotation in 2008 and the start of this season, was optioned to Durham when LHP Scott Kazmir returned from the disabled list. He had said he was planning on working on sharpening some of his pitches, and improving on his approach to right-handed hitters.
It's unclear yet when Sonnanstine will return, but it doesn't sound like it's the more serious kind of mono, rather more like flu-like symptoms, and he'll get back on the mound when he recovers.
Sonnanstine is 2-0 with a 3.46 ERA in two starts with the Bulls.
