Four callups for now - Bennett, Riggans, Perez, Sonnanstine
Rays will make just four callups for Tuesday - RHP Jeff Bennett, C Shawn Riggans, OF Fernando Perez, and RHP Andy Sonnanstine.
There will be more coming as the week/month unfolds, manager Joe Maddon said. Perez and Bennett will be active for Triple-A Durham tonight; Sonnanstine, who is starting Tuesday vs. Boston, and Riggans are on the way to St. Pete.
Riggans, who has played just one game in the majors this season, was chosen over Michel Hernandez because he is on the 40-man roster and Hernandez is not, having been designated for assignment and outrighted following the Aug. 7 acquisition of Gregg Zaun.
Bennett is something of a surprose choice over Dale Thayer and Joe Nelson, the two other relievers on the 40-man roster, but Maddon explained that Bennett has been working as a starter for the Bulls and is stretched out to the point where the Rays could use him as a long man in the event of a blow out against the Red Sox, Tigers or Yankees.
