Carlos Pena shares AL home run crown
Though Carlos Pena has missed the last month of the season due to left hand surgery, he has reached another memorable milestone, and another first for the Rays.
With the Rays holding Yankees 1B Mark Teixeira without a homer for three straight days, Pena remained tied at 39 with him and will share the AL home run crown.
“This is so cool, when I was a kid I used to imagine that all the time,” Pena said. “For it to materialize, it’s a thrill. I would be lying if I didn’t tell you I was extremely excited it ended up this way. I wish I would have kept on playing – still the question remains to me what it could have been. But I’m also grateful because I thought it was a good season for me.”
It was a rare feat. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, no player in the live ball era (since 1920) has ever led his league in home runs despite missing at least 25 games to end the season (the number Pena will miss).
