Marc Topkin’s takeaways from Wednesday’s Rays-Red Sox game

Rays finally might have four regular starting pitchers.

In a way, the timing of RHP Jake Faria's oblique injury seemed manageable in that RHP Nathan Eovaldi is close to coming off the disabled list and can step in. But on the other hand, the Rays finally could have four regular starters. Imagine that.

There was a lot of credit, and some blame, for the fifth-inning play where the Rays threw out Eduardo Nunez at the plate. And this was one of those situations where the Red Sox's on-deck batter, Christian Vazquez, could have helped.

RHP Chris Archer took the good-but-not-good-enough approach, but he should take some satisfaction in how well he pitched. Maybe it was matching up with ex-mate David Price, maybe facing the tough Red Sox, maybe just a roll he's on, but it was an encouraging outing in any event.
