ST. PETERSBURG — The Rays' bullpenning experiment continues, with right-hander Ryne Stanek to open this afternoon's game against the Orioles at Tropicana Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4:10.
It is the first career start for Stanek, who has pitched 25 innings since his call-up a little more than a year ago. He'll try to get the first three to six outs before turning the game over to left-hander Anthony Banda.
This will be Stanek's third appearance against Baltimore this season. He surrendered a grand slam to Manny Machado on May 11 and pitched a scoreless inning the next day.
Outfielder Carlos Gomez returns to the lineup for the Rays. He hasn't played in a game since May 15 because of a groin strain.
