Blake Snell wins Rays MVP award; Wendle, Smith also honored

The Tampa Bay chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association today named LHP Blake Snell winner of the Rays 2018 Don Zimmer MVP award.

Snell, a unanimous selection, was honored at the Clutch Hitters luncheon at the Hilton Carillon, receiving his award from Soot Zimmer, wife of the baseball legend and longtime Rays advisor, and Times writer/Tampa  Bay BBWAA chairman Marc Topkin.

Snell is set to make his final start of the season on Saturday with a 21-5, 1.90 mark.

"You guys got it right," Rays manager Kevin Cash said.

INF Joey Wendle was also a unanimous choice as the Rays Outstanding Rookie.

OF Mallex Smith was named winner of the Paul C. Smith Champion Award, given to the Rays player who best exemplifies the spirit of true professionalism on and off the field.
Snell and the other winners are also to be introduced before the game tonight at the Trop.
