Adrian Rondon officially signs with Rays
ST. PETERSBURG – The Rays officially announced the signing of the top international prospect, Adrian Rondon, on Monday, along with a trade that helped make it work financially.
The Dominican shortstop signed on his 16th birthday for $2.95 million. The 6-foot-2 Rondon is considered to have an advanced bat and could develop into a solid fielder.
The Rays had about $2 million in a bonus pool to use on international prospects but alleviated those concerns with a trade. The team sent RHP prospect Matt Ramsey to the Marlins for their second, third and fourth international bonus slots, which were valued at just over $1 million. If the Rays go over their allotted signing pool, they risk financial penalties and future limits on international bonuses.
Ramsey had a 1.07 ERA in 24 appearances in Double-A Montgomery.
