All-Star Moore placed on DL with elbow soreness
UPDATE, 4:58: Moore said an MRI showed no structural damage and manager Joe Maddon said the Rays are "not very concerned,'' expecting Moore - and RHP Alex Cobb - to both be ready by mid-August.
Moore said he felt a sore muscle in his elbow while throwing changeups during Sunday's start in New York, but was fine with his other pitches. After an MRI Monday was clean, Moore let it rest for a few days. But after playing catch today from 70 feet, Moore felt some soreness, leading to the decision to go on the DL.
Moore said while it's frustrating to be out, with the team's upcoming schedule in August and several offdays, they would only need a four-man rotation. Since the rest of staff is pitching so well, Moore believes they won't "skip a beat."
Moore said it was the best decision for the team going forward, that it was better to be smart with it now so he can be ready to pitch during the key stretch run. He hasn't had an elbow injury since being in the big leagues, but is very optimistic he'll be back sooner rather than later.
Maddon said they're just being cautious with the All-Star, glad that they caught it when they did, and thinks he'll be able to return - without a rehab assignment - after the team's next road trip.
DEVELOPING: The Rays have placed All-Star LHP Matt Moore on the disabled list with elbow soreness.
Moore, 24, felt some soreness in his elbow during his last start on Sunday in New York.
The Rays are optimisitic it is nothing serious and say Moore may miss only one start. By backdting the DL move to Monday, Moore would be eligible to return Aug. 13.
Moore is 14-3 with a 3.41 ERA in 21 starts. He made his first All-Star appearance on July 16.
They don't need to add another pitcher given the number of off-days over the next two weeks and can go with a four-man rotation.
This weekend, they will start Chris Archer on Friday, David Price on Saturday and Roberto Hernandez on Sunday against the Giants.
INF Ryan Roberts was called up to take Moore's spot on the roster.
