And now ... it's time for baseball, as Rays prep to open camp

6

February

Now that that football game is over with, it's time to focus on baseball, as the Rays today pack their equipment truck for the 75-mile trek south to Port Charlotte, with the official opening of spring training camp on Feb. 12 and the first workout Feb. 14 at the Charlotte Sports Park.

Having already had a busy off-season, the Rays still have some moves to make. 1B Logan Morrison has to be added to the 40-man roster after agreeing last week to return, and they are in pursuit of an other hitter (from a group that includes free agents Chris Carter, Mike Napoli and Matt Wieters and Byung Ho Park in trade) and a reliever.

Here are some some facts and figures, and then a look at key dates and their roster, currently at 62:

14 new faces are on the 40-man roster:
Free agents (3): C Wilson Ramos, OF Colby Rasmus, RHP Shawn Tolleson
Via trade (2): RHP Jose De Leon, OF Mallex Smith

Promoted from minors (8): INF Willy Adames, LHP Jose Alvarado, RHP Chih-Wei Hu, RHP Austin Pruitt, INF Daniel Robertson, RHP Jaime Schultz, RHP Ryne Stanek, RHP Hunter Wood

17 players were dropped from the season-ending 40-man roster (though Morrison was brought back):

Traded (5): 2B Logan Forsythe, OF Mikie Mahtook, INF/OF Taylor Motter, INF/OF Richie Shaffer, LHP Drew Smyly
Waived (4): OF Jaff Decker, RHP Dylan Floro, RHP Steve Geltz, INF Juniel Querecuto
