Catching up with some Rays news and notes



Back at it after a couple weeks off, catching up on some Rays news and notes:

* The deadline to file for arbitration is Tuesday, but the more significant deadline is Friday when the team and players exchange figures, and under Rays policy is the cut off for negotiating with a hearing then scheduled.

The Rays have seven players remaining in the arbitration process, headlined by David Price. Among the seven is C Jose Lobaton, who is expected to be traded given the acquisition of Ryan Hanigan. This could be the week to trade Lobaton so the acquiring team can work out his salary. Here are the arb eligibles, with projected salaries by

* C Eddy Rodriguez was signed, according to writer Corey Brock. Rodriguez, a Miami product, played briefly for the Padres in 2012 and split 2013 between Double- and Triple-A. There was also some talk that the Rays inked a minor-league deal with OF Justin Christian, who has some time with the Yankees and Giants and spent last season with St. Louis' AAA team.

* The Rays fifth annual winter development program started Monday, and runs through Thursday, gathering 27 of the team's top younger prospects for workouts, instruction, media training and community service appearances (MacDill Air Force Base, Pinellas Park Boys and Girls Club).

PITCHERS: Damion Carroll, Jacob Faria, Roberto Gomez, Jesse Hahn, German Marquez, Matthew Ramsey, C.J. Riefenhauser, Nick Sawyer, Jaime Schultz, Blake Snell, Hunter Wood, Kirby Yates

CATCHERS:  Curt Casali, Nick Ciuffo, Oscar Hernandez

INFIELDERS: Vince Belnome, Ryan Brett, Spencer Edwards, Jake Hager, Brandon Martin, Richie Shaffer, Riley Unroe, Kean Wong

OUTFIELDERS:  Granden Goetzman, Thomas Milone, Josh Sale, Andrew Toles

* Chris Westmoreland, a 17-year team employee, was promoted to director of team travel (replacing Jeff Ziegler) and clubhouse operations, with Jose Fernandez promoted from assistant to home clubhouse manager and Ryan Denlinger promoted from the staff to assistant home clubhouse manager.
