The Rays traded C Robinson Chirinos to the Rangers today in another deal for a player to be named or cash.

Chirinos was designated for assignment April 1, along with C Stephen Vogt, as the Rays had to create two spots on the 40-man roster.

They traded to Vogt to Oakland and now Chirinos to the Rangers, who put him on their 40-man roster but sent him to Triple-A.

Chirinos was acquired in the January 2011 deal that sent Matt Garza to the Cubs. Chrinos made his major-league debut that season, then missed all of last year after sustaining a concussion in spring training.

In addition to big-leaguers Jose Molina and Jose Lobaton, the only other catcher left in the organization with big-league experience is Chris Gimenez, who is at Triple-A. If the Rays needed someone beyond Gimenez, their options would be Mark Thomas, who has been to big-league camp and is at Double-A, or Craig Albernaz, who has been backing up at Triple-A and also a veteran of big-league camp.
