About those Shields and Zobrist to the Angels rumors ....
With the trade deadline approaching, rumors can be incessant at this time of year. And, also, illogical.
Saturday, Jim Bowden, the former GM who writes for ESPN.com and hosts a Sirius XM radio show, fed the beast by tweeting about a rumored deal that would send Rays starter James Shields AND 2B/RF Ben Zobrist to the Angels, for a package that included 2B Howie Kendrick, RHP Garrett Richards and minor-league RHP John Hellweg:
Rumors swirling around Angels stadium of a Richards, Hellweg,Kendrick +package deal for Shields&Zobrist...conversation only at this point
The Rays don't usually comment on any of this stuff, but manager Joe Maddon was willing to make an exception in relaying the conversation he and executive VP Andrew Friedman had about the report.
"He said, did you see this? I said no, and he told me,'' Maddon said. "We had a good guffaw over it. Almost a chortle.''
While there could be a case made for the Rays to trade Shields, moving Zobrist makes absolutely no sense as he is one of their most productive, valuable and versatile players, and signed to a long-term deal at reasonable terms.
"It was pretty funny,'' Maddon said.
Maddon made it clear they were not in any way denigrating Kendrick or the pitchers in their conversation.
As for Bowden, who Maddon sometimes joins on the radio?
"A fun guy,'' Maddon said. "And he's got a very creative mind.''
