And in rightfield ... Pat Burrell?
Pat Burrell sounds like he wants to join the competition for playing time in rightfield.
"Well, there really isn't a rightfielder as far as I know, so I told them if they need me to play I'd like to play,'' Burrell said. "That's really about it. I don't know what they're going to do with (Ben) Zobrist and everything else, obviously if he's going to play rightfield he deserves to play. But if it doesn't work out like that, and there's a chance for me to play, I would love to.''
Burrell will play right on Sunday in Clearwater, and manager Joe Maddon said Burrell talked to them about getting to do so more often. Maddon said they'd try it more during the spring but was noncommital about doing so during the season.
Burrell struggled immensely in his first season as a DH last season with the Rays, and may see playing the field as a way to return to form. He played just one game there last season.
The Rays have several other options even if they decide to use Zobrist at second base, including Matt Joyce and veteran Gabe Kapler.
