Balfour headed to DL, with rib strain
RHP Grant Balfour is headed to the DL, with a intercostal (rib) strain.
That's a significant loss for the Rays, as Balfour has been a key piece of the bullpen formula that has been working so well. In 44 games, he is 1-1 with a 2.08 ERA, striking out 44 in 43 1/3 innings.
With Balfour sidelined, that opens a roster spot for just acquired RHP Chad Qualls, though that deal may have been in the works before the injury. Balfour last pitched Wednesday, and seemed fine before Friday's game, so it's not clear yet exactly how and when it occurred.
Of greater concern for the Rays, the typical recovery time is considered four-six weeks.
