Benoit on the verge of something
Rays reliever Joaquin Benoit has struck out the last nine batters he's faced, though over the course of three games, so he's chasing history more than the record books.
The last pitcher to strike out 10 consecutive batters over multiple games, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, was Eric Gagne, who did so over four games from May 17-21, 2003, for the Dodgers, against the Marlins and Rockies. The last pitcher to get nine straight over multiple games before that was Armando Benitez, in three games from Sept. 8-14, 1998, for the Orioles.
The major-league record for consecutive strikeouts is 10, though that's it one game, held by Tom Seaver, who set down the final 10 Padres in an April 22, 1970 masterpiece for the Mets, in which he struck out 19 overall. According to Elias, there is no official record for most consecutive strikeouts over multiple games.
