Bobby V takes an odd shot at Maddon
Embattled Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine took a shot at Rays manager Joe Maddon today during a radio interview, claiming — incorrectly — Maddon routinely shows up late in the afternoon for games.
Valentine, asked about arriving at 4 p.m. for a recent 7 p.m. game in Oakland, said he didn't see why it was a big deal and then dragged Maddon into it, saying, sarcastically: "Four o'clock. That's so late for a 7:05 game. Joe Maddon gets there every day at 4 o'clock, just for the record.'' Valentine then came back to talk about Maddon again at the end of the interview.
Maddon, who is routinely at the Trop by 2:45 for home games and at road stadiums around 3, said he found the episode "amusing, and somewhat flattering.'''
And he made sure to have fun with it.
First, as he walked out for his daily pre-game session with the media, he said: "Sorry I'm late, I just got here.''
Then on his @RaysJoeMaddon Twitter account, he posted: Apologies to the writers for being late to today's pregame session. My pedicure appointment ran a little late.
Also, Maddon said: "I think it's pretty funny. It's all very amusing, and I'm slightly flattered, too. More than anything, it's amusing.''
Valentine and Maddon exchanged some barbs after a bench-clearing incident earlier this season in Boston.
And he came back at the end ofwhat was a combative interview on WEEI, to rip on Maddon again:
"All I'm going to say is I'm very disappointed and personally hurt that someone would actually report that that was a day of coming late. After 42 years on the job, to do something that was absolutely proper--waiting for my son's late plane to get there. I know he's 29 and could have made it from San Francisco to Oakland on his own but I wanted to be there when he got off that plane because that's what I promised. To get there the same time as another manager in my division gets there every day, just about. (When host Glenn Ordway asked who that was, Valentine responded) Joe Maddon. That's when he shows up every day. Not a day, every day, OK? And to have reporters report that's getting to work late, that's just irresponsible. ''
Valentine appeared to base his comments on an article in Sports Illustrated on Maddon:
"Joe Maddon in his Sports Illustrated article said, 'What do you think I'm gonna do go around the clubhouse and sit around in my underwear for a couple hours? I show up at 3:30 or 4 o'clock every day.' Every day. Does that mean he's late every day?"
Maddon did say Wednesday he doesn't go along with the managers who show up at 12:30 or 1 for night game. "I'm really opposed to that group,'' he said. "I'm not into the eyewash component. I'm not 24-7 either.''
