BRaysers will be sold at Saks
ST. PETERSBURG – The now-popular BRayser sports coat responsible for the Rays new devotion to plaid this postseason will now be available for purchase.
The team is working on finalizing details to sell authentic BRaysers at local Saks Fifth Avenue stores by this weekend, Rays senior vice president Mark Fernandez said.
“The look took off right away. It’s essentially the new ‘9=8,’” said Fernandez, comparing the plaid look to the Rays’ 2008 postseason slogan.
Fans won’t be able to walk out of Saks with a BRayser. Fernandez said they will be custom made through Lialia, the same Manhattan boutique run by local designer Julia Alarcon that made the team’s original blazers.
The jackets will retail at around $300 each.
The Rays wore the BRaysers – blue-and-white Rays blazers with the team’s sunburst logo on the left chest -- on their seven-day West Coast road trip to Oakland and Anaheim in August, a project coordinated by TV announcer Todd Kalas. Since then, manager Joe Maddon has become enamored with the look.
Official MLB apparel including Rays caps with plaid bills and playoff shirts with plaid lettering are already popular items at the Trop and the Rays team store in downtown Tampa. Even the Major League Baseball Authentic sign on the Trop outfield wall has plaid on it.
“MLB was actually even more enthusiast about it than us,” Fernandez said.
