With Brignac uncertain, Rays will use E. Johnson more
With Reid Brignac's status uncertain due to a plantar fascia condition in his right foot, the Rays will give Elliot Johnson more time at shortstop to prep him for regular-season duty.
Brignac remains limited with the Rays uncertain when he will get back on the field. Manager Joe Maddon said the injury "has a chance" to impact Brignac's availability to be ready to start the season. If he isn't available, the Rays likely would have Sean Rodriguez as the starter and Johnson - who is out of options and otherwise could be lost on waivers - as the backup.
"We need to play Elliot there anyway but, yes, the fact that Reid's hurting a bit getting Elliot out there a but more would be what we're looking for,'' Maddon said.
* Maddon confirmed that LF Desmond Jennings has a sore right shoulder but said they are confident he needs only a couple days rest and will be fine. Jennings could get at-bats, presumably as the DH, in a minor-league game on Friday.
* CF B.J. Upton remains sidelined, sore and uncomfortable according to Maddon, as a result of the March 14 outfield collision with Jennings. Upton was working out in Port Charlotte today.
