Burrell is a Grizzlie, for now
Pat Burrell is on his way to Salt Lake City today to join the Giants' Triple-A Freson team after agreeing to a minor-league contract, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported Friday that the deal would have a "quick out date" of maybe two weeks, meaning either Burrell would be called up or allowed to leave. Also Rosenthal said Burrell would have a bench role if promoted with "no promise" of at-bats.
The Rays are paying the $6.8-million remaining on Burrell's contract, though they'd get a slight break - a pro-rated share of the $400,000 major-league minimum - for any time Burrell spends in the major leagues.
